Everybody takes it upon themselves to advise women on how to navigate love, life and everything in between. From “well-meaning” uncles and aunties, to the next door neighbour, and sometimes even our friends, we women get advice (often unsolicited) on everything! But, most commonly, it is about matters of the heart. Little do we realise that more often than not, this advice is garbage! We asked eight women what the worst dating advice they’ve ever received was. You may be shocked, or you may be thoroughly entertained! Here goes…

Dessidre, 27

“Don’t eat too much on a date.” WHAT? If I’m going to a restaurant on a date, I’m going to starve myself all day so I can eat all that good food! And, that the guy should always pay for the date. Really? Why?

Priyanka, 27

Make him wait. Arrive fashionably late!

Shivani G, 27

“Let the guy come to you, don’t go after him. Let him pay. Don’t respond immediately.”

The whole “play with your hair while talking to him,” “lean in”, etc. They seem like harmless little things, but they’re actually destabilising for the woman who is subconsciously just wiring herself to please a guy, even if it is through passive manipulation.

Naina, 32

Bikul ignore maar, dekhiyo 6 din, ladka in.” Don’t ask me who gave me this bullshit piece of advice, and why! Oh and, I’ll have you know… I tried it. He found someone else.

Sharon, 31

As you can see, I have crazy curls which, by the way, I LOVE! But, I can’t even begin to tell you the number of times I’ve been told to straighten my hair when I go for a date. It feels like that whole “can’t tame a girl with curly hair” stereotype.

Shruti, 28

“Wear girly clothes and try not to talk too much.” I would laugh my ass off if it didn’t make me livid! Firstly, girly clothes are damn uncomfortable, and secondly, don’t talk too much? What? Am I a show piece?

Shalini, 33

“Try to be as mysterious as you can.” WHAT does this even mean? Please somebody explain!
