Josiah Duggar and his wife Lauren Swanson only tied the knot a few weeks ago, but they think they’re already off to a pretty stellar start with this whole marriage thing. The Counting On star revealed to People that his parents shared their relationship advice with the newlyweds—and they’re taking it to heart.

“Most importantly, both of our families emphasized how important it is to keep Christ central in our marriage,” the couple told the publication in the latest issue of the magazine. “Marriage is a gift from God and putting Christ first is the most important thing we can do to ensure a marriage that is strong, healthy and able to withstand all the ups and downs of life.”

“My family also encouraged me to look for every chance to serve Lauren—to genuinely serve her and put her first, ahead of myself,” added Josiah.

Josiah wasn’t the only one to get a dose of marriage advice: Lauren’s parents also gave her some pointers on how to make their marriage last. “My parents encouraged me to be Josiah’s biggest fan, offer him support and encouragement. Think the best, never assume the worst. Be his biggest cheerleader,” the bride said.

The couple tied the knot on June 30 at John Brown University Cathedral of the Ozarks in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. The couple confirmed the news at the time, telling People in a joint statement, “What a joy it is to be husband and wife! Our wedding day was absolutely perfect!”

Lauren’s father, Dwain Swanson, officiated the ceremony, which had a rustic romance theme that incorporated flowers, wood, and iron accents into the decor and the couple opted for a handful of color schemes, including grey and blue, pink and olive, plus green and white. The newlyweds served a variety of sweets at their reception, including cupcakes, a candy bar, and heart-shaped wedding cake.

The two first announced their courtship in January, and two months later, they revealed that they were engaged. “We are overjoyed to begin this new phase of our lives together,” Josiah told People at the time. “Through the years our families’ friendship has allowed us to get to know one another as friends. I can definitely say I have found a great friend … even better than I could have hoped for or imagined.”
