Jada Pinkett Smith's Latest Marriage Advice Is a Must-Read for All Couples

As far as Hollywood marriages go, Jada Pinkett Smith’s commitment to Will Smith, and vice versa, has been perhaps one of the biggest testaments to love in the industry in the last few decades.
The pair, who met on the set of Smith’s former hit sitcom, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, got hitched in December 1997, and are parents to two talented, multi-hyphenate children: daughter Willow, 17, and son Jaden, 20. In a post to Instagram this weeekend, then, Pinkett Smith mused about the many marriages she’s noticed disintegrating around her as of late, and she had a few words of advice for those going through the “painful” process.
“I’ve been watching a lot [of] marriages dissolve around me,” the 46-year-old actress wrote. “It’s been really painful. Marriages changes. Sometimes they need to be reimagined and transformed. Sometimes they are simply over … but either way, I pray that folks going thru this painful transition find the patience and the love within to not throw the ‘babies’ out with the bath water. #family.”
In the accompanying image, Pinkett Smith and her husband, 49, look happy and carefree as they take a stroll with their two kids, a bright blue sky and swaying palm trees behind them.
Earlier this summer, Smith opened up about his marriage to Pinkett Smith, revealing that they have been together for so long and love each other in such a way that they no longer even call themselves married anymore.
“We refer to ourselves as life partners, where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life,” he told Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast. “[There are] no deal breakers. There’s nothing she could do—ever—nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support till death and it feels so good to get to that space.”
Pinkett Smith has similarly referenced their status as “life partners” before, telling “Sway in the Morning” in June, “Here’s the thing about Will and I—[we] are family. That is never going down,” she said. “It’s just not. Ever. We are family. Take out all that whole marriage/relationship crap, at the end of the day, Will and I are family. I am going to hold him down, doesn’t matter. … At the end of the day, that is a man that can rely on me for the rest of his life, period.”
